Niagara Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America.

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls forming the southern end of the Niagara Gorge. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil FallsThe Horseshoe Falls are shared by both the United States and Canada, while the American Falls, as the name suggests, lie entirely on the United States’ side, separated by Goat Island. The Bridal Veil Falls, the smallest of all, are also on the United States’ side, separated from the American Falls by Luna Island.

Discover Unlimited Beauty

Niagara Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, by flow rate. During peak daytime, more than 168,000 m3 (six million cubic feet) of water flows every minute though the combined Niagara Falls. The roar of the falling water can be heard miles away.

Since the water of the falls is also used for electricity generation purposes by both the US and Canada, a bilateral international treaty regulates the total amount of water that can be diverted to hydropower plants. The controls allow to preserve the natural beauty of the falls, yet allow for ample electricty generation off-season and during the night time.

Explore the area

Niagara Falls State Park, NY and the Niagara Heritage Trail, Ontario offer remarkable sightseeing and diverse hiking opportunities.

Niagara Falls is flanked by two cities with the same name in Ontario, Canada, and, other side, in the State of New York, the US. It also overlooks the Niagara Gorge and allows access to the Maid of the Mist tour boats, as well as Cave of the Winds and Goat IslandFor nature lovers, there are many hiking trails and picnic tables within the park.

On the Canadian side, tourists enjoy the Niagara Heritage Trail, which is a historic and scenic route running the entire 35 mile Canadian coastline of the Niagara River from Fort Erie northward to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Niagara Falls boat tours are a must for anyone visiting the Falls.

No visit to Niagara Falls is complete without a boat cruise.

On the US side, the boat tours are served by the Maid of the Mist, which sets sail from Niagara Falls, NY State. Visitors take the elevator from the Prospect Point Observation Tower to the Niagara River shore to dock the boat.

On the Canadian side, the boat tours are served by the Hornblower Niagara Cruises. The dock is located on Niagara Parkway at the foot of Clifton Hill.

Both boat tours take you very close to the Horseshoe Falls. In order to keep their passengers relatively dry, both Maid of the Mist and Hornblower provide free ponchos with distinct colors. Maid of the Mist provides blue ponchos, whereas Hornblower passengers receive red ponchos. It was truly romantic. We came for our honeymoon at the end of September. It was our first trip to Niagara Falls and we loved it!

I had a great time with my friends. In the morning, we took a boat ride to the Falls. We got seriously wet. Spent the rest of the day in a sports bar getting warm. I will be definitely coming back.
